ENGLISH WEEK

In the year 2005 the Primary and Secondary students celebrated “English Week” with great enthusiasm. This is a classic for the English Department at Sir Alexander Fleming School. For two weeks the younger and the older students organize and plan their participation in the various events, individually or in groups.

The central theme this year was “Using English to Solve Conflicts” and the main objective was that the students actively use the English language by exchanging knowledge and experiences about world affairs. The following activities were thus developed:

              • Poster Competition for both Primary and Secondary

              • Sir Alexander Fleming and Great Britain Quiz for Primary

              • Spelling Bee Competition for Primary

              • International Fair regarding African Countries which were former Colonies.

              • Trivia Challenge for Secondary.

  • Mock United Nations for Secondary.

              • Talent Show for Primary and Secondary.

Each of these events caught the attention and interest of our pupils. At the International Fair that took place on Tuesday 04 October, there were 110 students presenting exhibitions of about

16 countries, such as Madagascar, Rwanda, South Africa, Bothswana, among others.

In the Trivia Challenge, for example, the participants answered questions not only about history and geography, but also about art, sports, literature, and mathematics. We had 128 students registered in 16 teams!! The excitement was such that on the final date for the Trivia, 5th Year students decided to organize a similar challenge for their teachers. They gathered and worked on interesting questions which made many teachers sweat!

The Mock United Nations competition was the new addition this year and it turned out to be a tremendous success. Students made teams around a made-up world and discussed geographical, economical, social and even political issues that interfered with their relations with one another. The winning team was the country that managed to propose the best alternative solutions.

It was hard work for the Department, but at the same time it was very gratifying to see the motivation and dedication of the students.
