Fleming College is an authorized Open Centre to
administer the University of Cambridge Local Examinations
Syndicate (UCLES) Exams
and for academic evaluations (CIE) in our region.
The UCLES exams help assess the ability to use
English in authentic situations. The certificates are
recognized by universities, companies, and educational
authorities in many countries around the world, and the
exams are administered in more than 130 countries, including
Peru.
Each year more than a million people take a
Cambridge exam in any of its five levels
(KET, PET, FCE, CAE, or CPE).
The examinations assess the candidate’s ability in all the
language skills: reading, writing, listening, speaking,
and use of English.
The first level is the Key English Test
(KET),
which is the threshold level recognizing the basic ability
to communicate in English in everyday situations, ideal for
the people who plan to travel for tourism.
The second level is the Preliminary English Test
(PET), recognized
by many companies and institutions as the first step for
people who want to work or study abroad.
The First Certificate of English
(FCE) is used by many
companies as a standard of an intermediate level of language
ability. Therefore, a person who has been awarded this
certificate is considered able to work in English in many
business positions, especially in the area of customer
service.
The fourth level is the Certificate in Advanced
English (CAE),
which is very useful for people trying to carry out studies
abroad.
Finally, the Certificate of Proficiency in
English (CPE)
represents the highest level because a person who is awarded
this certificate is recognized worldwide as a near native
speaker, and can perform satisfactorily in English in any
context and situation.
Young learners of English are not
neglected, and thus similar exams were developed for
children aged 7 – 11 in three different levels: Starters,
Movers, and Flyers.
IGCSE
These exams are offered to Fourth Year students
for the international exams in Computer Studies, Spanish,
Integrated Sciences (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) and
Mathematics.
In addition to the practices and drills, extra
reinforcing lessons will take place after school.
Your support and supervision will be very valuable
to ensure your children’s success in the exams.
If you have any doubt or question, do not
hesitate to ask the teacher in charge or me.
Exam Preparation
During May and June the English Department offers
a programme of preparation for the pupils inscribed in KET,
PET, FCE and CAE to take place in June. During school hours,
the pupils have the opportunity to practice in small groups
with an English assistant as a supplement. This effort
contributes to the success in the results obtained by the
pupils.
We also acknowledge the dedication and time offered by
volunteer mothers who work from May onwards in the Parent
Volunteer Reading Programme with our pupils in Lower School.
This support strengthens the reading capacity of the pupils.
November-December sessions
For the end-of-year Cambridge exams the
registration will be carried out in Setember. You will
receive the corresponding information in due time with the
teacher’s recommendation of which exam your child should
take. We will continue with the complementary practice, the
after school preparation and the internal drills. We will
appreciate your support and supervision at home.
Statement of Results
All of the students who took the exams in June
will receive their Statements of Results as well as
individual counselling and recommendations to continue their
progress. As soon as we receive the diplomas, they will be
given out in a special ceremony.
