CHAMPIONS!

Miss Marisol narrates the final of the tournament Semillero 2007

...And once again, the “SECONDS” were in our favour...

You have no idea what it was like to watch our “Champions Category 98” playing!!!

11:00 a.m.: We set off on a bus provided by Linea, impeccably uniformed players, a super cheering squad made up of students, parents and some teachers, a huge bass drum, balloons and a megaphone, headed towards Union Stadium, barely able to contain the nerves we felt (as Fabrizio Torres pointed out) as we drove to play the final of the Semillero 2007 Tournament organized by the Peruvian Football Federation and Trujillo's Provincial Council.

We found our places in the stands of the stadium where we met Mr. and Mrs. Nocker, more students, parents, grandparents and great grandparents

The FLEMING CHEERING SQUAD presented some beautiful posters, made by fourth grade girls, while the boys started blowing up very long balloons with which they made hats for all of us to wear.

And then the game began. The first goal was scored by the opposing team. We couldn’t believe it and were “a bit speechless” for a while.

The first half was over; there were only 30 seconds left before the game would end, when a fantastic move by our team's number 9 (Jorge Quirós) had us all shouting GOAAAAAL! FLEMING SCORED!!!!! while the drum played and the megaphone blasted out its music. It was a draw. Our team had to play another fifteen minutes.

But that was not it. The fifteen minutes were played under incredible pressure but the end result was still the same.

It was time to go to penalties, and all the responsibility fell on the “good little hands” of our goalkeeper, Oscar Calderón.

He missed the other team’s first shot. But he SAVED the second and the third ones. The tournament was ours!!!!!

After receiving their trophy, the team ran a VICTORY LAP of the Stadium.

We were back in school after 2 p.m. with our champions, who had had worked so hard for this victory every Saturday in April and deserved it.

I can still see Mauricio Rodríguez’s serious expression as he stopped the other team’s attacks, Ranieri Manucci’s short steps, the confidence of our young reinforcement Manuel Alonso Ganoza, Gonzalo Magana’s courage, Paul Marquina’s left footed kicks, the long passes and feints of our team’s organizer Santiago Fernández, Felipe Salaverry’s headers, Jorge Quirós’ goal, of course, and our goalkeeper Oscar Calderón’s two saves, as well as Alonso Iturri and Diego Solé’s inconditional support with the team’s trainer, Enrique Bazalar and his assistant Efilio Samaniego!!!

CONGRATULATIONS to all of them!!!!
