During the first bimester P5C and F pupils,
studied living organisms in the Science and
Environment class taught by Sr. José Novoa.
They studied their most important
characteristics such as nutrition,
reproduction and behaviour and they
conducted a simple experiment.
This experiment was carried out by
putting water, sugar and yeast
into two
flasks and mixing them well. One of the
flasks was heated for 10 minutes and after
it got cold, a balloon was placed on it.
Another
balloon was placed on the other flask which
had not been warmed.
After 10
minutes the balloon on the flask which had
not been warmed became inflated whilst the
balloon on the warmed flask did not.
The result of this
experiment showed the children that warming
the yeast made it die as it is a living
organism. Meanwhile the yeast in the other
flask which was not warmed stayed alive as
the environment was favourable. The live
yeast was fed by the sugar, reproduced
itself and produced
carbon dioxide,
a gas which allowed the balloon to inflate.
In Fleming College pupils are being
encouraged to learn through discovering and
observing for themselves the results of such
experiments rather than simply reading from
a book or the teacher either telling them
the answer or doing the experiment. As a
result the learning becomes more enjoyable
and amusing.
