ENGLISH WEEK 2007
The annual English Week at Fleming College has been and
gone, leaving behind fantastic memories of super
spellers, tenacious trivia teams, devious debaters and
incredible International Fair stalls. The theme this
year was music and, as the winning slogan in the poster
competition said, ‘English is the key to music’.
Every year our students take part in a wide variety of
events: trivia quizzes, spelling bees, poster
competitions, karaoke. This year we added debating to
the competitions. Teams in the secondary school competed
against each other to deliver speeches on topics
connected with music: the music industry is only
interested in looks not talent, piracy is stealing,
international music is destroying our Peruvian culture.
Students argued with great authority and style, showing
everyone just how much debating has improved in the past
two years at Fleming. Who knows, perhaps a future
president of Peru delivered their first speech here in
Fleming College?
The primary students were not over-shadowed by their
secondary friends. Pupils from first grade through to
sixth grade rose to the challenge of the spelling bee.
After elimination rounds in class the competition was
between three students from each grade. Parents and
classmates all watched, in awe, as our champion spellers
got word after word correct. The wonderful thing about
this competition is how calm our young students are
under pressure, and how well they support and encourage
their friends who make mistakes. All the participants
should be very proud of their achievements.
Perhaps the biggest event of the week brings primary and
secondary students together in the popular International
Fair. This year over 170 students participated,
representing countries from Colombia and South Africa to
Australia and Jamaica. Students were challenged to find
out all about their country and to present the
information through posters, presentations and
performances. Parents and other students visited the
stands and tried food and drink, listened to music from
that country and saw the national costumes. This year we
learned about Sufi music from Morocco, how to make sushi
from Japan and how to belly dance in Turkey. We even saw
dancing leprechauns from Ireland.
At Fleming College we are committed to helping the
society we live in. During this year’s International
Fair students were asked to raise money for the Fight
against Cancer. They sold candy floss from America,
tacos from Mexico and the Greeks organised a
mini-Olympics where teachers paid 1 sole to race against
a colleague. In total we raised over 880 soles, showing
once again that Fleming students care and act on their
beliefs.
The final event of the week was the much anticipated
Talent Show. People danced and sang, pulled rabbits from
hats and entertained the crowds of parents and students
gathered outside on a cool afternoon. We even heard from
the newly formed Teacher’s Band who performed Another
Brick in the Wall, a favourite of teachers everywhere.
The final act, by tradition, is the now infamous
Teachers Without Talent. Teachers from all departments
show their sense of fun, lack of coordination and
terrible dress sense as they perform the final song of
the show. This time they even wrote their own words! I
love English Week, so stick another dime in the jukebox
baby…. The crowd went wild as our brave teachers took to
the stage and ended the afternoon with another
unforgettable showstopper.
