Teaching Social Studies
by the development of skills is what Fleming proposes. This is reflected
in the pedagogical objectives such as learning to reason, awakening
curiosity, discussing hypotheses in groups, verifying experiences, etc.,
fostering our students’ personal growth that approaches them to the
truth of universal values.
The program also intends to develop various activities and pay
personalized attention to each student, creating the conditions to
innovate and do a successful job. It seeks to link the students with
their milieu so that they be aware of the possibilities it offers them.
It is like “opening the eyes to the world” to better understand their
environmental conditions, their problems and needs, as well as the
changes that are necessary for a better use of our resources.
When teaching Social Studies we try to guide the students so that they
are “always discovering new things”. The course is planned as a kind of
“trip” that will let them know about places and wealth unknown to them
before.
The topics discussed are about the latest events that are very present
in modern life. This approach is used to motivate and interest the
students, making the course very active and dynamic. The students are
thus encouraged to participate in the decisions, making them feel
responsible for the changes that need to be made to use our resources
better, so they feel they are part of history.
Although each area has its own characteristics and is independent from
the other, there is a common aspect to all of them: the work is done
based on observation. All the units start with a motivating topic in
order to catch the students’ attention.
Most of the activities consist of performing tasks that will enable the
students to apply as a whole everything they have learnt in the course.
