In Primary the teachers
of Holistic Communication –as is now called the Spanish course- have the
task to lay the foundations of the Spanish language in our students, but
in particular we teach them to put it into practice. The three skills we
promote and help develop are to know how the express themselves orally,
how to write, and how to read. All these skills have the pleasure of
reading as a starting point. In this sense, Fleming is a school that
motivates reading as the school day begins for everyone with a period
for reading a good book.
On the other hand, not only through language can children express
themselves but also through their bodies, facial expressions, music, and
art. That’s the reason for the new name of the traditional Spanish
course: Holistic Communication. The children do role-plays, draw their
emotions, graph music, play charades, interpret images, and thus they
learn to fully communicate in different ways. For this purpose we apply
the theory of Multiple Intelligences that seeks to highlight in each
student their best skills and abilities by approaching knowledge from
different perspectives.
We want our students’ compositions to reflect their mastering of the
theoretical aspects of language, which is grammar and accuracy (spelling
and punctuation), fostering creativity and originality. And, as they
start expressing themselves more accurately as the year goes by, we have
the ‘Juegos Florales’, which are the creativity –mainly literary-
competitions where all the students from first grade on participate
divided by categories. We are greatly pleased that the Jury, who are
recognized personalities of the literary world, comment on the
excellence of the stories and poems, and have a hard time to decide who
are the winners due to the great quality of the works presented.
The Spanish Department teachers work together as a team to plan the
activities to make our pupils become observing and critical beings,
capable of adopting a position and support it with good arguments but
showing respect for the others. We want to have future citizens that are
capable of questioning and at the same time of giving ideas to solve
problems. But we also want people who can be deeply moved by a beautiful
poem.
