Primary School

Welcome to the Primary School. This level caters to students from 6 to 12 years of age. According to age, the students are placed in Grade 1 to 6.

Primary provides a firm base for students to enter secondary with the skills, values and positive attitudes they require. Emphasis is placed on effort grades. This is because we want children to achieve their full potential, create a sense of responsibility and develop good work habits. It is important they be prepared to face challenges with confidence and high self- esteem.

Sports and Community Service also play an important part in the development of our students.

Structure

There are usually two classes in each grade. Each class has a tutor, who is responsible for all matters concerning the students. Each class also has subject teachers. Grade one and two has a teacher assistant.

The School Day:

Children enter the school at 7:30 a.m. They have a 20 minutes period of Tutorial. Lessons begin at 7:30 a.m. and finish at 3:00 p.m.   Pupils have half an hour for break and half an hour for lunch.
Silent Reading period is from 7:50 a.m. to 8:10 a.m.
During this time pupils can read what they like without the need to write a report about it.  The objective is to incentive their reading ability. We want them to read for pleasure and not as an obligation.

At 3:15 p.m. Games and/or Extracurricular Activities start until 3:45 p.m.

The curriculum and Teaching Approach

Bilingual Education is provided throughout primary. A British National Curriculum and a Peruvian Curriculum have been integrated to form the base for the academic demands of secondary.

Spanish, Maths, English, Social Studies, Art, Personal and Social Development, Science and Environmental Studies, Religion, IT, PE are subjects included in first and second Grade.

Spanish, Maths, English, Geography, History, Art, Personal and Social Development, Science and Environmental Studies, Religion, IT, PE are subjects included in third, fourth, fifth and sixth Grade.

Teaching for Understanding (TFU) has been implemented at Fleming. By building understanding students are able to know how, where or when to use their knowledge. The Units of each subject (one or two per bimester) are designed according to the TFU elements: Generative Topics, Understanding Goals, Understanding Performances, and Outgoing Assessments.

Diary and Message Notebook

The Diary (3rd to 4th Grade) and Message Notebook (1st to 2nd) Grade) are important means of communication with parents. The students write the homework in it. Tutor, teachers and parents can also write messages to each other in it. Parents have to sign it at the end of each week and tutors have to sign it once a week, too.

First and Second Grade Assemblies

Interesting and educational assemblies for first and second grade students are held  throughout the year. Each class takes a turn to share their work with the other classes. This allows them to practise presentation skills.

Special certificates are also given to students who get 30 merit points.

“Your children deserve the very best.”
