AIMS
Since 2004, we have been committed to promoting a reading
culture throughout the school. We want our students to
develop good reading habits and to improve linguistic
proficiency in the long run.
We have studied and collected evidence that confirms the
value of reading. Here is some of that evidence:
• More reading means better reading (Pilgreen and Krashen,
1993),
• Reading ability is connected to reading recreationally. (National
Center for Educational
Statistics, 1997),
• Reading means significant improvement in achievement tests
• Proved to be the most effective way to increase
comprehension and vocabulary growth.
• Promotes an appreciation of books.
• Broadens knowledge
• It is a worthwhile pastime.
PROCEDURE
Free voluntary reading is not the same as guided reading,
which is more teacher-controlled. We want to encourage
students to read for pleasure- as they develop a love for
reading, they will eventually want to read more and more.
So, reading material is of the students’ own choice. It
could be easy or difficult, short or lengthy, in Spanish or
in English. The fifteen-minute period at the beginning of
the day is for independent, uninterrupted reading, not
cluttered by a follow-up or report.
We have established a school wide reading period, where
everyone, including the Heads and the Headmaster reads.
