Secret Path
Non de
plume: Mustard Seed
It was a
Saturday afternoon and there were almost no clouds in the
sky. The wind was blowing swiftly and the birds were singing.
John got up early in the morning to do his chores, like
always. His mother had breakfast ready and his father was
out of town. He got dressed and went out after eating
breakfast.
John was
a 15 year old boy with black hair and deep blue eyes. He was
a particularly tall boy for his age. His father was a
business man and his mother did nothing other than staying
at home. July and Margaret, his twin sisters went to school,
but today was Saturday. As he went out he felt a chill.
There were more clouds in the sky now and the wind had
gotten cooler.
He
thought of going inside and getting a jacket when the
postman arrived.
John went to the gate to salute him but the postman just
handed the envelop and left.
John just
stared at him as he went away. That was not usually what
happened, the postman would normally say hi and ask a few
questions before giving the delivery. John did not pay much
attention to that. He looked at the envelop and saw his dads
name written on it. He ran to the house and showed it to his
mother. She opened it right away and started reading it. As
she read her face changed, she now had a poignant expression.
She put the letter on the table, while her eyes slowly begun
to fill up with tears.
They
buried father in a beautiful place filled with marvelous
gardens and brilliant flowers. He had died in a car crash
while going back home. John was in charge of the family now;
they would not be able to afford staying at their house so
they moved in with his uncle. His uncle’s house was very big
and it had plenty of bedrooms, it seemed that they would now
live in a puzzle. John didn’t like that idea.
Two
months after his father past away John found himself walking
around the house thinking how much things he would have
liked to say to him when he found a door he had not seen
before. It was a dark brownish door, it didn’t look very new
and it had some words printed on it “Go back”. John
did not know what to think or do, it didn’t make any sense.
He tried to open the door but it appeared to be locked, he
tried pushing it and pulling it but nothing worked. Later
that day he asked his uncle about that door to his surprise
his uncle did not know anything about it.
John had
trouble sleeping that night he could not stop himself from
wondering what might be behind that door. He thought a glass
of milk may help, so he went downstairs and drank some milk.
He was placing the glass in the sink when he heard a high
pitched sound coming from upstairs; the glass fell out of
his hand and landed in the sink with a loud crash. He knew
where the noise came from; he didn’t care about the broken
glass he just walked slowly up the stairs trying not to make
any noise, which was odd since he had just broken a glass.
When he
reached the door he grabbed the doorknob and twisted it, to
his amazement it opened. He walked inside but felt blind, he
couldn’t see a thing. He tried to feel the wall; this was
not difficult for it looked like it was a narrow path. He
walked on and on for what seemed to be hours. His legs
started aching and he was felling cold and slightly dizzy.
When he was planning on going back he felt a chill going
down his spinal cord he turned around and stared out into
the darkness. He heard a voice calling him “John! John!
Come here baby John!” It was his father’s voice. He ran
towards the voice but when he tried to scream he would find
himself an able to do it. He ran and ran trying to get to
where the voice was coming from when he suddenly realized
that he had been going nowhere.
John
opened his eyes and so the phosphorescent stars on the
ceiling. He was in his bedroom; it had all been a dream, a
really bad dream. The door was real though, or was it? He
didn’t know what to think anymore. He just waited for the
sunrise and got out of bed. When he did, he noticed
something strange. He was in his old house. He went
downstairs and found his mother crying. She had a letter in
her hand. It couldn’t be it was too preposterous to be true.
This nightmare was coming to life and there was nothing he
could do about it. What could have caused this? Could it
have been the path? He would never know, but it would be
something that would haunt him for the rest of his days.
