Johnny Truman’s Letter 9/9/05
When I wrote that title I thought of myself.
Reminds me something I did, about two or three years ago.
I didn’t do it by myself; I did it with five other guys. You
could say they are my best friends, even if I don’t know
where they are at this moment.
I wont write my name, that would be to risky. I’ll just say
that I am a thief.
But not one of those who steal wallets and think they are
the best. No, I am a thief, a real one.
It was 1994, I remember it so clearly. I had just graduated
from the University. A lawyer, that’s what I was. Big
change? Not really.
You can do it, that’s the phrase that changed my boring life
behind a desk in an office that always smelled like
cigarette smoke and coffee.
I thought of stealing my boss’s safe box. It had lots of
money.
You’ll think on stealing it too if you get paid only 100 $
per month.
So I made a plan. It was pretty basic actually. I just
memorized the time where everyone was not around, like I
learned from the movies.
And I did it. I had two million dollars, two million
dollars! Can you even imagine that!? In 1996 it was a lot of
money
They never got me. I just moved to another state, and expend
my money carefully, so I wouldn’t draw attention.
It became an addiction, stealing I mean. I was a workaholic,
and my job was being a thief.
I associated myself with more thieves and we tried to steal
money from a Bank.
We got caught. I spent three years in prison (I’m a good
lawyer, what did you expect? Besides I gave ten thousand
dollars to the judge)
Then we tried again, but we failed again.
And so I have for the past few years. I have won some times.
But I have lost much more.
Now we are in 2005, the world is changing. We, thieves
aren’t well respected as we where before.
A kid came to see me, he had this plan for stealing from a
museum. I said to him that I was retired and that I would be
a lawyer again.
So why am I writing this, why do I sat some people never
learn?
Because I had a second though and changed my mind. If I’m
getting out from the business I must do it so fine that
everyone shall remember me, and I will appear at the front
page of the New York Times.
They are here now, I must leave. Wish me luck please.
