Dear Alan:
"I recall vividly the wonderfully friendly and
purposeful atmosphere at Fleming during the
visits I made there during my time as British
ambassador to Peru. I remember with particular
delight a lively meeting I once had with the
senior pupils in which I was asked some very
pointed questions, but in a way which combined
good
humour
and informality with respect - in both
directions. It was a memorable experience. The
school had a real buzz about it, as if everyone
- pupils and staff alike - knew that they were
part of an institution which was more than just
a place where you get an education, but a place
where you learnt values and principles, and
would emerge ready for the challenges of further
education and of life itself. It almost made me
want to give up diplomacy, and take up teaching
instead!”
